Yes, a former Trump campaign spokesperson really said that on Fox News

About a week after President Donald Trump defended people who marched with neo-Nazis in Charlottesville, former Trump campaign spokesperson Katrina Pierson called slavery "good history" during a Monday appearance on Fox News.

I'm not quite sure what to type from here. Pierson was on Fox along with John Hopkins University professor Wendy Osefo, who often appears on Fox News as a liberal counterweight. They debated whether Confederate statues should be taken down from the U.S. capitol.

Pierson, in her typically truculent I-will-keep-shouting-my-words-even-as-the-earth-around-me-crumbles style, said the Confederate monuments deserve "a place because bad history is still good history for this country." Read more...

‘American Horror Story: Cult’ debuts creepy credits featuring Trump and Clinton

The opening credits for American Horror Story: Cult have arrived, and there's no mistaking the season's theme, which plays up the idea of a political circus with a cavalcade of clowns, alongside figures wearing Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton masks.

Other totally reassuring images include a figure in a gas mask carrying an unconscious (we hope) dog, bees crawling over a hive, and a bloodied American flag.

The credits for Season 7 of Ryan Murphy's horror anthology only list Sarah Paulson, Evan Peters, Cheyenne Jackson, Billie Lourd and Alison Pill, but other previously announced cast members include Emma Roberts, Billy Eichner, Colton Haynes, Leslie Grossman, Frances Conroy, Mare Winningham, Chaz Bono, Adina Porter and Lena Dunham. The Secret Service spent $60,000 on golf carts alone protecting Trump

President Donald Trump is bankrupting the Secret Service.

In an exclusive interview with USA Today, Secret Service Director Randolph "Tex" Alles said that more than 1,000 agents have already hit the federally mandated caps for salary and overtime allowances that were meant to last the entire year. That depletion of Secret Service funds is due to the high cost of protecting a family the size of Trump's and the number of trips they've taken, Alles told the publication.

So the Secret Service is dropping a pretty penny protecting Trump, but the question remains: Where is that money actually going to? We highlighted some of the most eye-popping numbers the Secret Service has to deal with, below. Read more...

Cloudflare CEO: It’s easy to kick out Nazis, but I’m worried about the long term

It’s easy to kick Nazis off your platform.

“People send you nice notes when you do,” said Matthew Prince, CEO of Cloudflare. “But I really worry about the long term.”

Prince’s company was one of many that took action in the wake of the recent (and in one case, fatal) violence in Charlottesville, Virginia, spurred by far right groups.

Not many people know what Cloudflare is, so, just know this: It’s a big part of the internet’s infrastructure. It’s significant—as was Prince’s decision to kick The Daily Stormer off Cloudflare, which helped lead to the website going offline.  Read more…

The eclipse: From ancient paganism to American history, it’s been a thing

Nothing reminds us that we are on a celestial island surrounded by the abyss like watching our planet's energy source turn into a gaping black hole.

But don't take my word for it. From occult and pagan lore to American history and yes, Hollywood, solar eclipses have been harbingers of doom, transformation, and revolution since time immemorial.

And can't you just ... feel it?

At a time when the fabric of American reality appears on the verge of collapse, maybe we can take comfort in the ancient beliefs that an eclipse isn't just a phenomenon. It's a sign. Read more...
